Graduate Student Intern Opportunities

The Long Term Residential Program at Evergreen Manor offers opportunities for graduate students in Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family and related programs.

Why Intern at Evergreen Manor?

Interns gain experience in a wide variety of treatment modalities, with patients who have a wide range of issues. Patients are accessible because they reside at the facility, often with their children. The graduate level Mental Health interns are also chemical dependency counselor interns, the intern hours are accumulated for both credentials at the same time. Learning about addiction can make a mental health counselor more effective at understanding and dealing with addiction in the mental health setting, or prepare a student to work in the field of chemical dependency, or with co-occurring disorders. Our clinical team works closely together, and is both professional and supportive.

Who are the clients?

Pregnant and parenting women, from age 18 to mid 40’s, often homeless, involved in domestic violence, involved with CPS, and/or the legal system. Our patients come with a wide range of addiction and mental health issues: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, bi-polar, and Alcohol Related Neurological Disorders. Couples or family therapy is encouraged, because chemical dependency is a family disease. Patients come from a variety of racial/ethnic groups, and all across Washington State.

What time commitment is involved?

Interns are expected to be on-site a minimum of 3 days per week, for 15-20 hours. At times, certain categories of service may be completed (for example individual client contact hours) for an intern, but he or she lacks family/relational hours. When this is the case, the intern is expected to continue with the full case load of individual counseling until the family/relational hours are completed. Some schools require only a 9 month internship, but Evergreen Manor requires a minimum of a 12 month commitment. We feel it takes a minimum of 12 months to fully learn all that is involved.

When does the internship start?
Interns can start at any time in the calendar year. At any given time, we have students who are just starting, who are in the middle of their internship and who are completing.

Is the Internship Paid?

No, graduate students in the residential program are not paid. There may be employment opportunities, contact the residential services clinical manager for details.
